Description

Braun et al reported the Acute Retroviral Syndrome Severity Score (ARSSS), a simple clinical score that can serve as a surrogate marker of HIV-1 disease progression. This is useful in situations where there are limited resources. The authors are from University of Zurich and the University of Lausanne.

Patient: age >= 18 years and acute or recent retroviral syndrome

Parameters:

(1) significant neurological symptoms (encephalitis, aseptic meningitis, paresis, facial nerve paresis, etc)

(2) inpatient treatment

(3) age in years

(4) temperature in °C (self-reported or observed)

(5) liver enzymes (AST or ALT in U/L

(6) platelet count in 10^9/L

= SUM(points for all of the parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 10

• Each 1-point increase is associated with a 0.1 log increase in viral load.

• Each 1-point increase is associated with decrease in CD4-positive lymphocytes by 12 per microliter.
