Description

A traveler or other nonimmune person may have pulmonary involvement during the acute phase of schistosomiasis as the cercariae migrate to take up residence.

The patient may be asymptomatic or may have:

(1) cough

(2) fever

(3) asthenia (loss of energy or strength)

Laboratory testing may show:

(1) eosinophilia

(2) anti-schistosomal antibodies, although in a first exposure the appearance may be delayed

A CT scan of the lungs is sensitive for detecting pulmonary involvement and will show:

(1) micro or macro-nodules

(2) ground glass halo about the nodules
