Description

Acute idiopathic scrotal edema (AISE) is a self-limited edema of the scrotum without identifiable cause.


 

Clinical features:

(1) usually occurs in young boys, but it can occur in adults

(2) edema and erythema of the scrotal skin that lasts 1 to 3 days

(3) usually painless but may be painful

 

All of the following are normal:

(1) physical examination

(2) laboratory testing

(3) arterial blood flow on Doppler ultrasonography

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) cellulitis

(2) testicular torsion

(3) angioedema

(4) contact allergy

(5) hematoma
