The term "active urine sediment" refers to changes seen with intrinsic renal disease such as acute glomerulonephritis.
Findings in active urine sediment:
(1) dysmorphic red blood cells
(2) red blood cell casts
(3) granular casts
An active urine sediment is usually associated with gross color changes with proteinuria and a positive dipstick test for blood.
