Description

Accumulated degree days (ADD) is a measure of environmental temperatures that a cadaver is exposed to while immersed in water. 


Case selection: drowned person

 

Parameters:

(1) date of disappearance

(2) date of recovery

(3) average daily water temperatures for every day from the day of disappearance to the day of recovery, in Centigrade. In the ocean surface water temperatures are usually > 0°C.

 

ADD =

= SUM(average daily temperatures for every day in the time interval)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum ADD: around 1

• maximum ADD: > 10,000 (for a long-term disappearance)
