Description

Accidental myiasis refers to entry of larvae into the gastrointestinal or genitourinary tract through food or water.


 

Fly larvae may be present in:

(1) food (uncooked or after cooking)

(2) unfiltered water

 

A human infestation through these routes usually requires the presence of a large number of larvae.

 

Manifestations:

(1) presence of maggots (larvae) in the feces or underwear

(2) migration of maggots along the urethra into the bladder with irritation

(3) migration of maggots up the gastrointestinal tract

(4) vomiting and/or diarrhea

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) eggs deposited in clothing after it has been washed
