Description

Acanthamoeba can rarely cause sinusitis.


 

Clinical features of sinusitis caused by an Acanthamoeba species:

(1) The patient has AIDS or other severe immunodeficiency.

(2) The patient has signs of sinusitis with

(2a) nasal discharge

(2b) headaches

(2c) facial pain

(2d) crusting

(3) The sinusitis has been resistant to multiple courses of antibiotics and appropriate therapy.

(4) The patient may also have acanthamoebic skin lesions.

(5) Biopsy of the sinus shows acanthamoeba within the purulent exudates.
