ABCD Score of Lee et al for Predicting Improvement in Diabetes Following Metabolic (Bariatric) Surgery in a Morbidly Obese Patient (Diabetes Surgery Score)
Lee et al reported the ABCD score for evaluating a morbidly obese patient prior to metabolic surgery. This can help to identify a patient whose diabetes may remit after surgery. The authors are from multiple institutions in Taiwan, Korea, India, Japan and Hong Kong.
ABCD is an acronym for age, body mass index, C-peptide and duration.
Patient selection: obese patient with diabetes prior to metabolic (bariatric surgery)
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) body mass index (BMI) in kg per sq meter
(3) serum C-peptide in ng/mL
(4) duration of type 2 diabetes in years

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 10
• The higher the score the more likely that there would be remission in diabetes.
