Description

Subramaniam et al described two frailty indices using the American College of Surgeons NSQIP data. The authors are from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City.

Patient selection: surgical patient prior to surgery

11-factor frailty index (mFI-11):

(1) functional status either partial or total dependency

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) history of COPD OR current pneumonia)

(4) congestive heart failure within 30 days before surgery

(5) history of myocardial infarction <= 6 months prior to surgery

(6) (previous PCI or CABJ) OR (previous cardiac surgery) OR (angina <= 1 month before surgery)

(7) hypertension requiring medications

(8) delirium or impaired sensorium

(9) (history of TIA OR (cerebrovascular accident AND no residual deficits)

(10) (cerebrovascular accident or stroke) AND neurologic deficit

(11) (history of revascularization or amputation due to peripheral vascular disease) OR rest pain OR gangrene

It is unclear if items 9 and 10 are mutually exclusive or additive. In the implementation it is assumed that they are mutually exclusive, giving a maximum score of 10 for mFI-11.
