Description

Denehy et al reported a modified Physical Function ICU Test (PFIT) to evaluate physical function of a patient in the intensive the care unit (ICU). The authors are from the University of Melbourne, Donvale Rehabilitation Hospital, and Austin Health (Melbourne).

Difference from original 5-item PFIT: removal of bilateral shoulder shrugs (in lifts per minute)

Patient selection: ICU patient on day 5-10 of ICU stay

Parameters:

(1) need for assistance to go from sitting to standing

(2) cadence in steps per minute

(3) shoulder flexion strength using MRC grades from 0 to 5

(4) knee extension strength using MRC grades from 0 to 5

= SUM(points for all of the parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 12

• The higher the score the better the outcomes.

• A table for converting the score (ordinal scale) to an interval scale is given. The interval value was considered better for tracking.
