Description

Dissemination in time in multiple sclerosis involves demonstration of new CNS lesions over time.

Method of analysis: MRI

Dissemination in time is defined as one of the following:

(1) simultaneous presence of gadolinium-enhancing and non-enhancing lesions at any time (indicating old and new lesions)

(2) a new T2 hyperintense or gadolinium-enhancing lesion on follow-up MRI (compared to a baseline scan, irrespective of the timing of the baseline MRI). It is not stated that the baseline MRI needs to show any lesions.

No distinction is made between symptomatic and asymptomatic MRI lesions is required.

An MRI lesion of the optic nerve in a patient with optic neuritis cannot be used to fulfill criteria.
