Description

The criteria for fibromyalgia have been revised by authors from multiple institutions in the United States, Canada and Europe. It combines the 2010 (physician based) and 2011 (patient based) criteria into a single set that can be used by both physician and patient.

Criteria for fibromyalgia - all of the following:

(1) generalized pain (present in at least 4 of 5 regions)

(2) symptoms present at the same level for >= 3 months

(3) widespread pain index (WPI) and symptom severity scale (SSS) meet thresholds (see table below)

Regions for generalized pain:

(1) left shoulder and upper extremity

(2) right shoulder and upper extremity

(3) neck and back

(4) left buttock and lower extremity

(5) right buttock and lower extremity

Pain in the jaw, chest and abdomen are included in the WPI but not in the determination of generalized pain. The determination of generalized pain is to avoid confusion with a regional pain syndrome.

A diagnosis of fibromyalgia can occur in the presence of other illnesses (it does not exclude other diagnoses and is valid irrespective of other diagnoses).

The changes incorporated in the 2016 revision are listed in Table 4, page 327, and summary.
