The International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) made recommendations for changing the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to detect gestational diabetes.

Patient selection: pregnant female, 24 to 28 weeks of gestation, not previously diagnosed as diabetic

Patient preparation: overnight fast of at least 8 hours

Oral Glucose load: 75 grams

Testing - performed in the morning following the fast with samples drawn at:

(1) baseline (T = 0)

(2) 1 hour after glucose load

(3) 2 hours after the glucose load

Classified as Gestational Diabetes if any of the following are present

baseline plasma

>= 92 mg/dL (5.1 mmol/L)

1 hour plasma

>= 180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L)

2 hour plasma

>= 153 mg/dL (8.5 mmol/L)
