The International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) made recommendations for changing the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) to detect gestational diabetes.
Patient selection: pregnant female, 24 to 28 weeks of gestation, not previously diagnosed as diabetic
Patient preparation: overnight fast of at least 8 hours
Oral Glucose load: 75 grams
Testing - performed in the morning following the fast with samples drawn at:
(1) baseline (T = 0)
(2) 1 hour after glucose load
(3) 2 hours after the glucose load
Specimen
Classified as Gestational Diabetes if any of the following are present
baseline plasma
>= 92 mg/dL (5.1 mmol/L)
1 hour plasma
>= 180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L)
2 hour plasma
>= 153 mg/dL (8.5 mmol/L)
