Description

The World Health Organization (WHO) proposed criteria for the diagnosis of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003.


 

Criteria for suspected SARS:

(1) patient presenting after 1 November 2002

(2) one or both of the following:

(2a) fever > 38°C with cough or breathing difficulty

(2b) death from an unexplained episode of ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome)

(3) exposure to one or more of the following during the 10 days prior to onset of symptoms:

(3a) close contact with a person who has a suspected or probable case of SARS

(3b) history of travel to an area with recent local transmission of SARS

(3c) residence in an area with recent local transmission of SARS

 

Criteria for probable SARS - patient with suspected SARS and 1 or more of the following:

(1) chest X-ray showing infiltrates consistent with pneumonia or ARDS

(2) positive for SARS-related coronavirus on >= 1 assay

(3) autopsy findings consistent with ARDS without an identifiable cause
