1,3-butadiene is a widely used chemical that is utilized production of synthetic rubber and a variety of polymers.
Exposure: primarily inhalation. Dermal contact and ingestion possible.
Toxicity may be related to the epoxide metabolites.
OSHA permissible exposure limit: 1 ppb
Acute toxicity:
(1) neurotoxicity (headache, dizziness, CNS depression)
(2) irritation to eyes and mucous membranes
(3) frostbite
Long-term toxicity:
(1) lymphoproliferative disorders (CLL, lymphoma)
(2) AML
(3) CML
(4) cardiovascular disease
Butadiene is extremely flammable and readily ignites.
