Description

Hatah et al reported the Malaysia Medication Adherence Assessment Tool (MyMAAT) for evaluating compliance of diabetic patients in Malaysia. The authors are from Universiti Kebansaan Malaysia, Jalan Universiti, and other institutions in Kuala Lumpur.


Patient selection: diabetic (but score can be applied to other conditions)

 

Adherence was defined as taking > 80% of prescribed drug.

 

Time period: past month

 

Items:

(1) frequently failed to take medication according to the doctor's instructions

(2) reduced medication intake when feeling better

(3) took medication alternately

(4) missed or was late for refills

(5) have an excess supply of prescribed medication at home

(6) did not comply because I felt that it was unnecessary

(7) frequently failed to remember to take medications

(8) regularly take less medication than prescribed because afraid of side effects

(9) fail to take medication if no one reminds me

(10) uncertain about daily medication doses

(11) unable to manage medication intake properly

(12) lack motivation to take medications as prescribed without help from loved ones

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 12

• maximum score: 60

• A score >= 55 was classified as nonadherent.

 

Performance:

• The sensitivity was between 0.73 and 0.83.

• The specificity was between 0.4 and 0.49.
