1,1,2-trichlorethylene (TCE) is a halogenated alkene that is a carcinogen. Its use is regulated and has been curtailed in many industries.
Cancers associated with TCE:
(1) renal cell carcinoma
(2) non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
(3) possibly hepatocellular carcinoma
Additional toxicity:
(1) production of irritant and toxic gases upon combustion
(2) formation of hydrochloric acid in the presence of sunlight and water
Exposures have been related to:
(1) industrial production
(2) production or use of hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant
(3) degreasing agent
(4) spot remover
(5) dry cleaning
(6) environmental contamination of food or ground water
It may be produced by some algae.
