Description

It is possible to survive a forest fire or wildfire within a vehicle. It may be safer than trying to run away from the fire on foot, especially for the very young, the very old or the disabled. In theory the risk of the gas tank exploding is low.

Recommendations:

(1) Close the air vents and roll up the windows.

(2) Turn your headlights on.

(3) If on a mountain try to reach downward slope on the side away from the fire and wind.

(4) Find the largest possible area with the minimum amount of combustible material. If there is time try to remove combustible material from under and around the vehicle.

(5) Pull off to the side of the road. Turn off the ignition but leave the lights on.

(6) Get down on the floor. Cover up with a blanket or coat to reduce exposure to radiant heat.

(7) Wait in the vehicle until the fire passes.

Avoid:

(1) Panic, especially during the height of the fire when the vehicle may rock or when it becomes hot within the vehicle or when there are flames all around.

(2) Driving blind through smoke.

(3) Driving recklessly.

Special situations that may require a change in strategy:

(1) Detachable trailer filled with flammable material.

(2) Leaking fuel tank.

(3) Broken or jammed window, or a window closed with plastic.

(4) Convertible.
