When a water supply is found to contain coliform bacteria chlorine may be added to disinfect it. The amount of chlorine to add can be calculated from the related measures.
Parameters:
(1) volume of water to be chlorinated
(2) target available chlorine concentration in parts per million (ppm, or mg/L)
(3) percent available chlorine in chlorine product
where:
• 1 metric ton of water = 1,000 kilograms = 2,204.62 pounds
weight of chlorine product in grams =
= (0.001 * (target chlorine in mg/L)) * (volume in liters) / (percent available chlorine as decimal fraction)
