A tympanoplasty is classified based on the extent of surgery required.
NOTE: These types overlap with the classification for cholesteatoma in the previous section.
Ossicles of the middle ear:
(1) malleolus (on the tympanic membrane)
(2) incus
(3) stapes (with footplate in the fenestra vestibuli)

• A normal ossicle is one that is intact and mobile.
• In a Type Vb tympanoplasty the stapes is removed (stapedectomy).
• In a Type Va tympanoplasty a new opening is made in the horizontal semicircular canal.
