Description

Markwalder et al developed a grading system for evaluating a patient presenting with a chronic subdural hematoma.

0

fully alert and conscious; may have mild symptoms such as headache

none or mild (reflex asymmetry)

1

drowsy or disoriented

variable neurologic deficits such as hemiparesis

stuporous but responds appropriately to noxious stimuli

severe focal signs such as hemiplegia

3

comatose, with absent motor responses to painful stimuli

decerebrate or decorticate posturing

4

 

Prognosis was good in Grades 0 and 1, fair in Grade 2, and guarded in Grades 3 and 4.
