Description

Although a term used with some frequency, “degenerate gambler” can be hard to define precisely. The degenerate gambler may be viewed as the opposite of a high-functioning addict.


 

Patient selection: gambling addiction

 

Features of the degenerate gambler:

(1) little or no control over gambling (compulsive need to bet an anything)

(2) some form of unacceptable moral or social behavior, such as stealing from family

(3) most people who know the person knows that the person has a problem with gambling (not a surprise)

 

Consequences of gambling losses:

(1) severe financial difficulties

(2) some form of disability (from stress, etc)
