Description

Celli et al proposed the BODE (Body Mass Index, Obstructive Airflow, Dyspnea, Exercise Capacity) Index for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The authors are from Tufts University, Bay Pines VA Medical Center, and hospitals in Spain and Venezuela.

Parameters:

(1) body mass index [BMI = (kilograms body weight) / ((height in meters)^2)]

(2) FEV1 as percent of predicted

(3) dyspnea, measured using the MRC dyspnea scale

(4) exercise capacity as measured by a 6-minute walk

Interpretation:

• minimum index: 0

• maximum index: 10

• The higher the index the worse the prognosis.
