Description

The breathing of compressed air at depth results in exposure to inert gases like nitrogen that can impair a diver's ability to think clearly.

Symptoms of nitrogen narcosis:

(1) loss of judgment

(2) loss of skills

(3) false sense of well-being or euphoria

(4) lack of concern for safety

(5) does things that are unsafe or dangerous

(6) acts stupid

(7) laughs inappropriately

(8) tingling or numbness noted in lips, gums and legs

(9) hallucinations or exhibiting bizarre behavior

(10) loss of consciousness

Risk factors for nitrogen narcosis:

(1) diving at depths greater than 100 feet, especially when greater than 150 feet

(2) inexperience with or infrequent deep diving

Management involves getting the person to a shallow depth where the effects are not felt.
