The first sign of a pheochromocytoma may be sudden death.
Diagnoses associated with sudden death include:
(1) multi-organ failure with shock
(2) cardiomyopathy
(3) fulminant hypertension with encephalopathy
The event may be triggered by:
(1) hemorrhage into the tumor
(2) anesthesia
(3) drugs
(4) blunt trauma to the abdomen
(5) severe exertion
