Description

An infant or child with hepatic encephalopathy may show different clinical findings than an adult.


 

In Stage 0 the patient is normal.

 

In Stages 1 or 2 the patient may:

(1) cry inconsolably

(2) not be behaving like self according to the parents

(3) have normal or hyperactive reflexes

 

In Stage 3 the patient may:

(1) be combative

(2) may be somnolent or in a stupor

(3) have hyperactive reflexes

 

In Stage 4 the patient may:

(1) be in a coma (Stage 4a if rousable with painful stimuli, Stage 4b if not)

(2) have absent reflexes

(3) show decerebrate or decorticate posturing

(4) have an abnormal EEG
