The male in an infertile couple may experience sexual dysfunction for many reasons.


 

The first step in evaluating the man is to determine whether the sexual dysfunction is the primary cause of the infertility or secondary to dealing with the infertility..

 

Types of sexual dysfunction that may be a cause for infertility:

(1) retrograde ejaculation

(2) retarded ejaculation

(3) inability to ejaculate

(4) erectile dysfunction

 

Causes of secondary sexual dysfunction in a male partner of an infertile couple:

(1) depression

(2) guilt

(3) conflict with partner

(4) performance anxiety, especially during fertile periods in the woman's ovulatory cycle

(5) medications

 

Types of secondary sexual dysfunction:

(1) decreased libido

(2) erectile dysfunction

(3) decreased satisfaction with sex

(4) premature ejaculation
