Description

Sea anemones have nematocysts which can cause a dermatitis in exposed skin.


 

The anemones are located in estuarine sediments. People who have contact with the sediment may become exposed.

 

People at risk:

(1) clam diggers

(2) beach patrol

(3) children

 

Sea anemones implicated in causing dermatitis:

(1) Alicia mirabilis

(2) Haloclava producta (“ghost anemone”)

 

Features of the dermatitis:

(1) pruritic

(2) erythematous

(3) vesiculopapular
