Description

SCORTEN is a severity of illness score developed by Bastuji-Garin et al for patients with toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN). This can be used to predict the patient's risk of mortality. The authors are from Hopital Henri-Mondor and Universite Paris XII.

Patient selection: toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN)

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) heart rate in beats per minute

(3) cancer or hematologic malignancy

(4) percent of body surface area (BSA) involved on day 1

(5) serum urea in mmol/L

(6) serum bicarbonate in mmol/L

(7) serum glucose in mmol/L

where:

• The text on page 151 and Table II (Bastuji-Garin, 2000) differ on age = 40 years, heart rate = 120 beats per minute, and percent BSA = 10%. The data in the table was used above.

SCORETEN =

= SUM(points for all 7 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum SCORTEN: 0

• maximum SCORTEN: 7

• The higher the SCORTEN the higher the mortality.

To predict the mortality rate:

X =

= (1.237 * X) - 4.448

probability of death =

= 1 / (1 + EXP((-1) * X))
