Description

A woman may develop a stress fracture of the sacrum which can present as low back or buttock pain.


 

Risk factors:

(1) osteoporosis

(2) rapid weight gain

(3) athlete undergoing unaccustomed or strenuous physical stress

(4) trauma

(5) pregnancy

 

Clinical features:

(1) low back pain

(2) buttock pain

(3) lower limb radiculopathy

 

Detection depends on the choice of imaging studies used. A routine pelvic X-ray may miss the fracture.
