Hindley et al identified risk factors associated with recurrence of child maltreatment. These can help identify a family situation where closer monitoring may be warranted. The authors are from Warneford Hospital in England.


 

Analysis: systematic review of 16 cohort studies (meta-analysis)

 

Risk factors associated with recurrent abuse:

(1) neglect as the form of maltreatment

(2) parental conflict

(3) parental mental illness

(4) multiple previous maltreatment episodes

 

If maltreatment recurs, it usually occurs in the first 30 days after the index event.
