Description

A spiral fracture may occur in the shaft of the humerus in throwers who develop excessive torque while throwing.


 

Risk factors:

(1) adult (uncommon before age 15)

(2) muscle fatigue in the throwing arm

(3) prodromal arm pain

(4) inadequate skills

(5) disruption of regular practice schedule

 

Risk reduction:

(1) prevent overuse, especially if arm pain is present

(2) develop proper throwing techniques

(3) if practice schedule is disrupted, gradually resume activity level
