Description

Hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature drops sharply. Certain factors may increase the likelihood of hypothermia when a person is exposed to cold temperatures.


Risk factors for hypothermia:

(1) low ambient temperatures

(2) high winds

(3) wet clothing

(4) inadequate clothing and headwear

(5) those with a tendency to sweaty hands and feet

(6) those suffering concurrent infection

(7) recent moderate or marked alcohol intake

(8) age at the extremes (infant or small child, elderly adult)

(9) fatigue
