Description

Certain risk factors are associated with hyperuricemia and gout. The presence of one or more of these findings can help identify patients who should be evaluated for gout.


 

Risk factors for hyperuricemia and gout:

(1) chronic alcohol consumption

(2) lead poisoning (saturnine gout)

(3) renal insufficiency

(4) dietary excess and obesity

(5) drug induced reduction in renal urate excretion (thiazide diuretic, furosemide or other loop diuretic, low dose salicylate therapy, cyclosporine, niacin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide, didanosine)

(6) cancer, including chemotherapy of solid tumors, leukemia, high grade lymphoma, myeloproliferative diseases

(7) family history

 

Conditions commonly found in patients with gout:

(1) diabetes mellitus, type 2 and/or insulin resistance

(2) hypertriglyceridemia and/or low HDL level

(3) hypertension

(4) coronary artery disease

(5) truncal obesity
