Description

Removing a car radiator cap while the engine is hot can result in release of high pressure steam that can cause thermal burns.

Risk factors for burn injury:

(1) an older car built without a sealed radiator

(2) a person unfamiliar with the risk of injury caused by opening a radiator under pressure

(3) a person trying to fix the car themselves

(4) an overheated engine, especially during the summer months

(5) lack of protective clothing

(6) failure to use a towel or cloth to wrap the cap before removal

The location of the burn depends on:

(1) whether the person is left or right handed (the hand used to remove the cap)

(2) whether the face was over the top of the radiator when the cap is removed

Most burns involve:

(1) the head and neck

(2) the upper extremity of the dominant hand

(3) the chest
