Description

The radiation dose equivalent includes the absorbed energy and the quality factor (Q value) of the radiation. The quality factor is an estimate of the radiation effect.

radiation dose equivalent =

= (absorbed dose) * (quality factor) * (local modifying factors)

Type of Radiation

Quality Factor

gamma, beta, X, electrons

1

Neutrons

2 to 11 (varies with energy)

Protons

5 to 10

alpha

20

The SI unit for the dose equivalent is the sievert (Sv), which is equals 100 rem (roentgen-equivalent-man). 1 rem has the effectiveness of 1 rad of X-rays. 1 milliSievert (mSv) is 0.1 rem.

Acute radiation sickness may follow an acute exposure of 250 mSv (0.25 Sv, 25 rem) and usually follows doses of 1,000 mSv (1 Sv).
