Description

Soto et al described issues affecting the quality of life for a patient with mucosal leishmaniasis. These can help identify a patient who may benefit from an intervention. The authors are from multiple institutions in Columbia, Bolivia, Germany and the United States.


 

Quality of life tends to be an issue for patients with more extensive disease.

 

Quality of life issues:

(1) cosmetic impact due to facial disfigurement

(2) difficulty eating, which may be associated with weight loss

(3) difficulty speaking and being heard (secondary to laryngeal involvement)

(4) social isolation
