Description

Garcia-Manero et al developed a prognostic score for patients with lower risk myelodysplasia. This can help to identify patients with a worse prognosis who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Patient selection: myelodysplastic syndrome with IPSS low or intermediate-1

Parameters:

(1) cytogenetics

(2) age in years

(3) hemoglobin in g/dL

(4) platelet count in 10^9/L

(5) percent bone marrow blasts

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 7

• The higher the score the worse the prognosis.

• A person in category 3 may benefit from early intervention.
