Description

Stineman et al identified prognostic factors affecting survival in patients with a lower limb amputation. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania, University of Florida, Albany Medical College and several Veterans Administration Medical Centers (VAMC).

Prognostic factors with the highest risk for mortality within 6 months:

(1) FIM Grade 1 (need for total assistance in one or more of the 13 FIM items for physical function)

(2) metastatic cancer

Prognostic factors associated with reduced 6 month survival:

(1) FIM Grades 2 to 5 (need for any assistance or supervision)

(2) need for hemodialysis

(3) cognitive impairment

(4) pulmonary circulatory disease

(5) active pulmonary disease

(6) substance abuse or mental health disorder

(7) valvular heart disease

(8) anemia secondary to chronic blood loss

(9) age >= 86 years
