Description

Robien et al identified risk factors for oral mucositis in patients with chronic myelogeneous leukemia (CML) undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Oral mucositis is very common following HCT, and these risk factors can help identify patients who may have severe oral mucositis. The authors are from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at the University of Washington.

Patient selection: >= 18 years of age

The HCT protocol included:

(1) a conditioning regimen (either cyclosphosphamide plus total body irradiation OR busulfan plus cyclophosphamide)

(2) 4 doses of methotrexate (MTX) to prevent graft-vs-host disease post-transplantation

Risk factors for oral mucositis:

(1) conditioning regimen with cyclophosphamide and total body irradiation

(2) body mass index (BMI) >= 25

(3) methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase ((MTHFR) C677T TT genotype

Protective measures:

(1) pretransplantation therapy with multivitamin supplementation
