Description

Ali et al identified risk factors for mortality in patients undergoing polytrauma with pelvic fractures. A patient at increased risk for mortality may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto in Canada.

Patient selection: polytrauma with pelvic fracture

Factors associated with mortality:

(1) older age (mean age 54 years)

(2) high head AIS (mean score 3)

(3) initial hypotension

(4) low initial hemoglobin (mean 11.1 g/dL)

(5) laparotomy

Laparotomy was associated with:

(1) low initial hemoglobin

(2) a positive FAST exam

(3) high chest AIS

(4) high abdominal AIS
