Description

A physician should only treat someone that she or he can maintain a detached, professional relationship with. Close personal or emotional attachment may cloud the physician’s judgment and result in substandard care.


 

Groups of people that a physician should avoid caring for under usual circumstances:

(1) self

(2) family members

(3) significant others

(4) anyone else where strong emotions may cloud judgment

 

Family members include:

(1) spouse

(2) parent

(3) child

(4) sibling

(5) grandparent

(6) other close family member

 

Signficant others:

(1) intimate friend (boyfriend, girlfriend)

(2) life partner

(3) divorced spouse

 

Anyone else that the physician has strong emotions (love, hate, etc) for:

(1) due to emotional attachment

(2) due to an inablility to be professionally detached from

(3) due to clouding of judgment

 

When dealing with such a person:

(1) the physician should not be the regular healthcare provider

(2) the physician should not routinely prescribe controlled substances

(3) the physician can provide emergency care only if no other provider is available or suitable
