Description

Pacu are freshwater fish primarily found in South America. They are related to piranha.

Originally found in the Amazon the fish have been introduced around the world, primarily in aquaria. Aquarium owners may release them into nearby streams. They have recently been found in Sweden. They can survive in warm and temperate waters but usually do not tolerate cold.

 

Pacu have powerful teeth which are typically used to eat seeds and nuts.

 

An adult pacu can be quite large.

 

The fish will bite almost anything and the jaws can cause injury to:

(1) fingers or toes

(2) genitalia if bathing nude
