Description

The number needed to treat with unmitigated (or unqualified) success reflects the number of patients who benefit from treatment and who do not develop an adverse event (double success). This combines both the number needed to treat and the number needed to harm.

Variables:

(1) number of people in control group

(2) number of people in control group who develop the target outcome

(3) number of people in control group who develop an adverse event during the time interval

(4) number of people in active treatment group

(5) number of people in the active treatment group who develop the target outcome

(6) number of people in active treatment group who develop an adverse event during the time interval

absolute risk reduction =

= (event rate in control group) - (event rate in active treatment group)

absolute risk increase =

= (adverse event rate in treatment group) - (adverse event rate in control group)

number needed to treat with unmitigated success =

= 1 / ((absolute risk reduction) * (1 - (absolute risk increase)))
