Description

The number needed to treat with unmitigated (or unqualified) failure reflects the number of patients who do not benefit from treatment and who have an adverse event (double failure). This combines both the event rate in the control group and the number needed to harm.

Variables:

(1) number of people in control group

(2) number of people in control group who develop the target outcome

(3) number of people in control group who develop an adverse event during the time interval

(4) number of people in active treatment group

(5) number of people in the active treatment group who develop the target outcome

(6) number of people in active treatment group who develop an adverse event during the time interval

absolute risk increase =

= (adverse event rate in treatment group) - (adverse event rate in control group)

number needed to treat with unmitigated success =

= 1 / ((event rate in control group) * (absolute risk increase))
