Description

Gold salts are associated with hypersensitivity reactions. Administration of sodium aurothiomalate can rarely result in a "nitritioid" reaction, usually during the first week of therapy.

Nitritoid reaction = reaction similar to that seen after administration of a nitrite

Clinical features:

(1) facial flushing

(2) nausea

(3) dizziness

(4) variable hypotension

The reaction is more common if the person is receiving an angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor (ACE inhibitor therapy is associated with anaphylactoid reactions following blood transfusion, see Chapter 05).
