Description

Incalzi et al identified a number of factors that may predict mortality for a geriatric patient admitted to an acute care hospital. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome and Cittadella della Carita in Taranto, Italy.

Patient selection: geriatric patient admitted to an acute care hospital, age > 70 years

Predictors of in-hospital mortality:

(1) malnutrition

(2) age-comorbidity index (see 01.13.30) > 7

(3) one or more impairments in activities of daily living (ADL) prior to hospital admission

(4) lymphocytopenia (absolute lymphocyte count < 1,000 per µL)

where:

• The use of the comorbidity index could be modified to include the number of items weighted 4 or 6 points.
