Description

Ingesting the seeds of the morning glory (genus Ipomea) can result in hallucinations.


 

Family members:

(1) Ipomea purpora

(2) Ipomea violacea

(3) Rivea corymbosa

 

History: used by the Aztec Indians in their religious ceremonies (ololiuqui)

 

Active ingredient: indole compounds, including lysergic acid amide

 

Usual dose required: > 100 seeds

 

Clinical effects:

(1) hallucinations

(2) altered mental status ranging from confusion to coma

(3) psychiatric disturbances (emotional lability, panic attack, paranoia, psychosis)

(4) nausea and vomiting

(5) dilated pupils

(6) hyperreflexia

(7) facial erythema

 

The usual reaction lasts 8 hours or less. Most patients require a calm and protective environment. Some patients may require a sedative such as diazepam. Long-term use or use with other hallucinogens may result in long-term psychiatric problems.
