Description

Verhelst et al used a simple symptom score to monitor therapy in patients with acromegaly. Stewart et al used a similar symptom score with a minor variation. Verhelst et al are from multiple universities in Belgium and Italy while Stewart et al are from the University of Birmingham in England.

Symptoms monitored by Verhelst et al:

(1) headache

(2) paresthesias

(3) arthralgia

(4) hyperhydrosis

(5) carpal tunnel syndrome

Each of these symptoms was scored from 0 to 3.

Symptom Severity

Points

none

0

mild

1

moderate

2

severe

3

Symptoms monitored by Stewart et al were similar except that tiredness was monitored instead of carpal tunnel symptoms.

In the implementation the symptom score uses the 5 symptoms of Verhelst et al plus tiredness (total of 6 symptoms)

total symptom score =

= SUM(points for all 6 symptoms)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 18

• The higher the score the more severe the symptoms.

The total score can be rescaled for 0 to 100:

adjusted score over range of 0 to 100 =

= 100 * (total score) / 18
