Description

Chronic exposure to vinyl chloride has been associated with development of a variety of hepatic tumors, some quite rare in the general population.

Hepatic tumors with good evidence for being associated with vinyl chloride exposure:

(1) angiosarcoma

(2) hemangiopericytoma

Hepatic tumors that may be associated with vinyl chloride (but not conclusive):

(1) hepatocellular carcinoma

(2) liver cell hyperplasia (diffuse or nodular)

(3) peliosis hepatis

Risk factors:

(1) prolonged exposure to vinyl chloride

(2) exposure to relatively high levels of vinyl chloride

(3) exposure to other hepatotoxins (ethanol, etc)

(4) possibly familial cancer risk
